Wildfire mitigation removes or rearranges vegetation so fire is less likely to start, spread, or reach structures. For North Carolina’s wooded neighborhoods and large lots—much of which sits in the wildland-urban interface (WUI)—the biggest risk is dense understory brush and “ladder fuels” that carry flames into the tree canopy.
